The Thomas G. Siccama Senior Lecturer in Environmental Field Studies, was explicitly created to provide students with hands-on experience in ecology and natural history. Therefore, my teaching and my research program maximizes opportunities for student participation. Through a combination of long-term observational studies and experimental work, the students who work with me learn and apply skills across a variety of natural science disciplines (e.g., soils, botany, wildlife), environmental measurement, experimental design, statistical analysis, and scientific writing. If you are interested in joining my lab, please check out our current research projects. Specific opportunities and contact information are below.

Research Opportunities

Prospective Masters Students

YSE has both professional and research focused masters programs. A great place to become familiar with our application process and guidelines would be to visit our How to Apply webpage. Other helpful resources include Event Recordings and Admissions Events pages as well as the Forestry-specific page, the Ecosystem Management & Conservation page, and the Research Degree specific page (MESc/MFS). Here is information about Funding your Master’s Degree, regarding financial aid, cost of attendance, student employment, and more.

MEM/MF

For the majority of students, our professional degrees are the best fit. For the professional degrees (MEM and MF), you do not need to pair with a faculty mentor before applying. While I work extensively with our professional students, I am not able to meet individually with prospective students before application. If you are a professional school candidate and have specific questions about my current projects, I will be happy to chat with you towards the end of the admissions cycle and will have time set aside for accepted students in March and April.

MESc/MFS

I am not currently not sure if I will be accepting any research degree students for this coming admissions cycle. I generally prioritize students who are interested in plant community dynamics or restoration ecology in temperate regions. I also am looking for people who are coming in with good field skills, life experience, and quantitative competency. If you are sure you are interested in pursuing a research degree and think that my lab is a good fit please fill out this google form by October 15th. I will contact prospective students who I am interested in meeting with before the application deadline. Please note that our admissions for our research degrees are NOT based on funding at the individual lab level, all YSE admissions go through the general admissions and financial aid process

PhD and Post Doctoral Researchers

I am not currently sponsoring PhD students or post-docs in my lab but encourage you to find other faculty at YSE who may be a good fit. I do serve on committees and collaborate with doctoral and post doctoral researchers, but am not able to fund those positions at this time. For more information about the doctoral program at YSE please reach out to Elisabeth Barsa (elisabeth.barsa@yale.edu).

Undergraduates

I sometimes support undergraduate students who might be interested in working or volunteering in the lab. If you are a current Yale Student please email Dr. Duguid to discuss opportunities. For non-Yale undergraduates please check out our summer internship program at Yale-Myers Forest.

High School Students

I do not hire minors to work in my lab, but please check out these programs at Yale which I sometimes work with students from: NCLC Leadership Program at Yale; the Yale Pathways to Science Program;  and the Peabody Museum Evolutions Program.
